Glocal Lab Defense Technology Protection Research Institute strengthens national defense security capabilities through industry-academia collaboration

On Thursday, February 12, 2026, COONTEC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kookmin University’s Defense Technology Protection Research Institute for technical research and exchange cooperation in the field of software-based defense technology security.
The agreement was initiated to strengthen Korea’s defense technology protection framework and accelerate the development of advanced software security technologies through collaboration between industry and the Defense Technology Protection Research Institute, a core research hub of the Ministry of Education’s Glocal Lab program.
Core Focus of the Agreement: Software-Based Defense Technology Security
Modern weapon systems are becoming increasingly dependent on software, making code-level security a critical national security challenge.

Expected Outcomes of the Collaboration
1. Advancement of Code Anti-Tampering Technology
COONTEC’s anti-tampering technology will be combined with Kookmin University’s side-channel attack defense technology to develop an integrated solution that protects weapon system software at the code level. The approach is expected to help prevent source-code reverse engineering, block cryptographic-key theft, and ensure the integrity of weapon system software.
2. Training Defense Security Professionals
Through practice-oriented industry-academia collaboration, the two organizations will systematically cultivate defense security specialists through hands-on training, technical seminars, and participation in joint research projects.
3. Practical Application of Research Outcomes
The institute’s theoretical research results will be combined with COONTEC’s field experience to develop technologies that can be applied directly in operational environments.

Ongoing Exchange and Collaboration
Alongside the MOU, the Defense Technology Protection Research Institute is promoting continuous technical exchange among industry, academia, research institutions, and the military through regular seminars and workshops. At a regular seminar held in February, consortium institutions including the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), Korea University Sejong Campus, and Kangwon National University, as well as students and researchers, shared the latest technology trends in defense technology protection and discussed areas for cooperation.
As cybersecurity threats to weapon systems continue to grow more sophisticated, COONTEC plans to further advance anti-tampering technologies that protect weapon system code itself through this agreement.
Through its collaboration with Kookmin University’s Defense Technology Protection Research Institute, COONTEC will also contribute to building an integrated defense security framework spanning both cyber and physical domains and create tangible outcomes for protecting critical national technologies.
